NEXT MEETING IS Wednesday, November 7th
Minutes
Minutes of October 3rd, 2007 SkyBlazers meeting, 8 pm, Young Blind Center, Absecon.
About 10 members were attending.
V. Pres. Ed Langowski opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance.
Ed asked if members wanted the minutes read, they said not, and minutes were approved.
Committee Reports:
SAM Stuff. Roy Wilson briefed on the SAM 12 meet. Unfortunately our SAM 12 chapter did not quite break even on finances for the meet, and so will not be able to provide funds to the SkyBlazers treasury. Next years meet will be a special one, celebrating 20 Years of SkyBlazer’s sponsored SAM 12 Meets!! Great show guys. Were looking forward to that. Several members participated in the SAM 1/2A Texaco “Postal” meet on Oct 3. (Yep, just before the meeting) Five pilots got in 14 flights. Mike Schall was 1st, Walt Geary 2nd, Roy Wilson 3rd, Ed Milewski 4th, Bruce Oakes 5th, the rest of the SkyBlazers, not being in attendance did not place – maybe next year?
Strawberry. Bruce Oakes cut grass today, it will be good for the weekend. Field has been cleaned up nicely after the Heli Gathering.
Heli Gathering. Ed Langowski noted the event went very well with several notable heli pilots in attendance that flew demo flights. 60 pilots were registered by Friday, and 108 by Saturday. Photos are on the Runryder web site. The site founder, Mark Ryder, his wife and daughter were there, and took videos.
Riverbend- Ed Langowski says the county recently cut the field, it is looking fine. He noted there is a third lock on the gate chain set up for a third party to have access. It does not effect our access to the field.
Ocean City Air Fest. Roy Wilson briefed - the event on Sep 22nd went great. Lots of SkyBlazers arrived to participate. The October Radiator had an article on the event and participants. Thanks again to all that participated. The Public Address system worked pretty well – there is a mobile mike that works great. Speakers located at the far side of the flight line were just loud enough to be heard at the RC flight line. Roy noted that for next year, having some speakers closer to the RC flight line would be a welcome improvement.
Ed Langowski noted the Salem club PigRoast on Sep 16th was it’s usual good time. He related a story of a 30% size Bearcat with a radial engine – unfortunately shearing a wing on landing.
Treasurer was not in attendance, no report this month.
New Business
Roy Wilson noted finding a letter concerning the model aircraft NJ state championship contest at Millville airport. It was signed off in 1950 by then SkyBlazer president Brody Dickerson. It will go to the club Historian.
Nomination for SkyBlazers Officers were opened:
Ed Langowski notes Bob Stinson will accept a nomination for President.
Ed will accept a nomination to stay on as Vice President.
We understand Ed McAllister will accept a nomination to stay on as Treasurer.
Ron Lockhart will accept a nomination to stay on as Safety Officer.
We especially need nominations for Secretary.
Nominations for all offices will be open at the November meeting. Please think about
your turn to support your club, and nominate yourself for a position this year.
Holiday Party – the spaghetti dinner we had last year (was it late January?) was a good event.
What is interest for one this January? If there is club interest, we can start planning.
Safety Stuff –
Ron Lockhart asked members to review the last year’s RC related events with an eye toward any accidents, or near accidents. And then take those lessons with them into next year to make it even safer.
Ron noted a recent accident at the NEAT Fair (an all electric model event) in NY. A pilot lost control of a heli that went behind the pilot and into a designated spectator area. It injured at least one person who was taken by ambulance to an emergency room. The spectator area was apparently about 40 feet behind the pilot line. Ron noted that the Heli Gathering was set up with the pit and spectator line about 120 feet from the pilot line – a much better safety margin. Pilot stands were about 220 feet from each other, providing a good margin between pilots.
Ed Langowski noted the Salem club has a rule requiring a “Throttle to idle or cut off” device on all models over approximately 72 inches span and 10 lbs, in the event of loss of radio signal, or interference.
Safety concerns are not limited to flying and flying fields.
A couple of members related stories of small electric airplanes coming alive in shops and leaving dents in walls, and some flesh. Ouch! Member noted that unlike glow engines, they don’t stop upon hitting something – so multiple prop strikes are likely. Some noted the potential hazard with charging Lipo batteries. How many power tools are in your shop? Are safety glasses in reach of each one?
Minutes by Ron Lockhart, Secretary.
President’s Corner Hello to all SkyBlazers!
November marks the nomination for club officers for 2008. I will not accept nomination for another year. I’ve done it for two years now, plus I’ve been doing a thankless job of editing the club newsletter, The Radiator, for several years. I will continue editing the newsletter but will step down as President this year. I will, however accept the nomination as club Vice President if I am asked to do that job. This is not to say that Ed Langowski has refused to do that job. I don’t know, I just am offering my name in case Ed decides not to run or if he wants to move up as Club President. I thank Ed for doing a fine job as Vice President and acting in my behalf in my frequent absence. That leaves Secretary and Treasurer. I don’t know if Ron or Ed want to continue on as Secretary and Treasurer respectively, so I cannot speak on their behalf. However, both have done an outstanding job in that role and I appreciate what they have done for the club.
This year, as all of our previous years, has been a successful year in making our club known and the sport we all love recognized by the general public. We’ve had a mall show, an open house at Riverbend, and sponsored three fine events, the SAM12 Old Timers Meet, the South Jersey Silent Flyers, and the Helicopter Gathering. All have brought welcome guests to our facilities and I am sure we have benefited by that with increased membership as well as general appreciation by the general public. I thank each and every participant for the time dedicated to help out in these endeavors. No matter who becomes the nominee and eventually, elected as President, I wish that person well and offer my assistance for a successful 2008.
I also thank some of our sponsors, especially Dave Eiting of Seaport Hobbies. Dave has donated RC equipment, aircraft, parts, gift certificates, and more. Thank you, Ed, for your generosity. You are one of a dying breed, a person that is really dedicated to the expansion and public knowledge of what we all love, RC flying.. of all disciplines. Thanks, Dave.
Your 2007 Club President,
Dick Soucy.

No, I am not getting out of the hobby, I am just thinning out so I can make some room for next year’s projects. I am also finding that I just don’t have time to build kits right now, so I’m getting rid of the kits to someone that has the time and desire to finish them can do so.
