THE NEXT MEETING The Regular Monthly meetings for the Atlantic County

Sky Blazers RC Model Flying Club are held at the

John D. Young Blind Center

100 Crestview Ave, Absecon, NJ

Next meeting will be Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008 at 8:00 pm.

Minutes

Minutes of the 5 March 2008 meeting of the Atlantic County Skyblazers:

The meeting was called to order at 8:02 PM with 28 members and guests present.

The Skyblazers welcomed Mr. Frank Fells as a guest of Brian Tindal. He came to the meeting to discuss the Large Scale event that is being planned for the early Fall. More on that later.

The Skyblazers also wish to welcome new member Paul Sirza, and his son Alexander. Welcome, Paul!

  1. Spaghetti dinner: The Spaghetti Dinner, as you all now know, was originally scheduled for 22 March. Well, this is the day before Easter. So, Dick is in the process of contacting Frank at the Lions Blind Center to reschedule for some time in April.
  2. Treasury: Ed McAllister presented the treasury report.
  3. Ed Milewski’s dad is in the hospital. We wish him well and a quick recovery.
  4. Riverbend: The club authorized $600 for road and parking areas repairs and recovering. The work has been authorized by the County so Bob Stinson will proceed with the repairs. Members also authorized an additional $100 for a payment for the services of the heavy equipment operator. He is volunteering to do this work for us without pay.
  5. Pattern: Ron Lockhart reported that there will be more information on upcoming pattern events in the next (this month) Upcoming Events schecule.
  6. Heli’s: Bob Stinson reported that the Gathering is on schedule and planning is currently in progress to get everything ready for the schedule dates in September. Any questions should be directed to Bob.
  7. SAM-12: Roy reports that the SAM’ers are headed to Leabanon and Hamburg for their swap meet. Roy invited all members to come and enjoy saying it’s the greatest around.
  8. Riverbend Public Event: Chris Murphy reported that the Riverbend public event is being planned. No date has been set yet, but that will come very soon. More information may be available before this edition is published.
  9. OC Airfest: Frank Impagliazzo sent an Email to Dick Soucy reporting that the date for the Ocean City Airfest is scheduled for Saturday, 20 September. The club is planning on purchasing a Flying Thingz Flying Lawnmower and developing a skit for an opening event at the Airfest. This should be a real crowd pleaser. Frank requests information on what we are planning so he can pass this on when he attends the meeting in Ocean City this Summer.
  10. Boy Scout Merit Badge for Aviation: Brian Tindal volunteered to head this program up. This will involve Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts coming to the field and learning about aviation, aircraft, and to fly RC trainer aircraft on the buddy box with a qualified instructor. This directly related to the merit badge and is actually a requirement for the badge, and definitely something that we can do and gives the club a blue ribbon for our civic activities. (AMA Leader Club GOLD)
  11. Swap Meet: Today (the day of the meeting) is the Skyblazers Interclub Swap Meet. Quite a lot of ‘stuff’ was present and quite a bit was sold. Good show, guys!!
  12. Tractor: Well, we all know that the Green Machine is in desperate need of replacement. So, Roy Wilson did some research and found that Arena Oldsmobile in Hammonton is also a dealership for the Cub Powershaft for $3600. Roy has the specifics on the unit and looked it over with Ed Milewski and reports that this unit is worth the money. (Additional information: Al Womelsdorf also took a look at the unit on a later date and gave his recommendation for approval). A new one costs in excess of $6000 so this one is a particularly good deal. The specific unit is a 2002 unit, but it is in like-new shape and comes with a warranty. Brian Tindal states that he may be able to find one (different brand and model) that may be less money. Ron Lockhart also mentioned that we can get a Sears unit for a lot less money, but several members said that a Sears would probably not hold up to the rigors of Strawberry and Riverbend. (Additional information: The club officers authorized President Roy Wilson to put a small deposit on the machine to hold it pending approval at the next meeting). The club members present at the next meeting will make a decision on the purchase of a new mower and the club will proceed from there.
  13. Giant Scale Event: This topic was given the most time because of the potential for controversy for having this event. As mentioned earlier, Frank Fells attended the meeting. Thanks for coming, Frank. We really appreciate your taking time to come to talk to us about this considering your physical condition (a cast on his leg and walking with crutches). Here is how it breaks down as far as how this is going to be handled:

i. Bob Stinson and Roy Wilson will be Co-Contest Directors for the event.

ii. The event will be held in late September, probably two weeks following the Gathering. All were in agreement that this would be the best time because it would be a season ending wind down type of fun fly, using the Gathering as a model.

iii. Frank Fells is going to act as an advisor and participant.

iv.
There will be a noise limit established and enforced. However, the noise limits will be measured informally using calibrated noise meters. Any aircraft that does not meet the established criteria will be prohibited from flying unless the problem is fixed using a more efficient muffler system or a different propeller, or whatever is required to reach the noise limits.
v.
The Forestry Department will be notified as will the neighbors with all invited to attend.

vi. Vendors will be present.

vii. This will be an AMA sanctioned event.

viii. Ed Langowski suggested Fail Safe, but this presented some opposition because other national events to not require it. More research will follow.

ix. A pilot sign off for items of responsibility (fail safe if needed, noise levels, and so on) at the time of signing in for the event. It was noted that if the numbers of attendees proves out as predicted, a lot of wasted time would be spent doing things that can be done by a sign-off sheet and by club field marshals that will be patrolling the field will insure that requirements are met.

14. Dues: Not all members have paid their 2008 dues yet. If you have not paid yet, please take care of this. The general consensus was that anyone that does not pay by April will loose privileges to fly at both fields. Dick Soucy said that a letter should be sent to each member that has not yet paid as a reminder of their dues payment with a reminder that they will no longer have flying privileges nor will they get a newsletter after April.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:10 and the swap meet started.

Dick Soucy, Secretary.

President’s Corner

THE USE OF OUR PUBLICLY OWNED FLYING FIELDS FOR SKYBLAZER MEMBER EXCLUSIVE AND UNCHALLENGED USE TRANSENDS THE PROPERTY'S USE FOR ANY PURPOSE THAT AROUSES THE NEIGHBORS THAT ADJOIN THE PROPERTIES. WE HAVE NO ARGUEMENT

What brought this on? Well, read on, my friends. Recently, a friendly stop by one of our members resulted in a discussion with one of the neighbors. He was upset about something and was not afraid to speak his mind. He mentioned a road, cut in by the Forestry people that now, after it rains, making his area flood with mud, etc. He also said that he does not like the big tank trucks, heavy equipment, and cars driving past his house, at times, well over what he considers a safe speed. He doesn't like the N.J. Forestry people. He also mentioned the four wheel drive trucks that frequently drive by, usually driving fast and making a lot of dust. They go to the air field and tear it up then drive back by his house at a high rate of speed. He is not happy about any of this.

Then came up" the little planes buzzing around making noise"

We advised him that other neighbors kind of liked us being there. He was not impressed. The discussion followed with our explanation of various things we can do to curb noise and otherwise be neighbor friendly, which, of course, is a No.1 Skyblazer consideration.

He was especially critical of the "Gathering" which was obvious because he mentioned participants driving by his house in campers, trailers, etc, and an event lasting three days and into the night and sometimes blocking the road.

In view of the fact that we are planning at least three events at Strawberry and at least one at Riverbend, we can say that this is the "worst news that this club can expect".

This neighbor also offered that, with a next door neighbor he was trying to convince, he would send a letter to the Mayor of Mays Landing outlining his grievances. In answer to this he was asked to write a letter to the Club Secretary stating his grievances so we can discuss them with the club members. He was agreeable to that and was impressed that we took the time to stop and speak with him.

This situation could change our club calendar, effect flying times, disallow driving by his house or get us kicked off the field altogether.

We will propose, together, a presentation to him. This presentation to be fully transparent, outlining our every plan and assuring him of maximum privacy although inviting him and others to visit with our members, introduce himself and possibly enjoy RC flying himself.

From the AMA: Safety

Reminders for the New Season by AMA Staff

AMA would like everyone to have a safe flying year with no accidents. Here are some items that might help in that regard.

The first is the use of Li-Poly batteries in our models. If you are flying electric airplanes with Li-Poly batteries, it is highly recommended that a fire extinguisher be kept in your car. Fire caused by Li-Poly batteries can happen through a shortage, improper charging, or crash damage. Standard household extinguishers (Class A, B, C or a combination of these) will not put out a lithium fire. Rather, it can increase the blaze. Class D extinguishers (metal/sand) are the only type capable of putting out flammable metal.

If a class D fire extinguisher cannot be obtained for your vehicle or flying site, at the least, keep buckets of sand ready and available should a fire start. (The sand must be dry because water reacts with lithium fires to make them worse.)

Second, remember to cycle the batteries in transmitters and airplanes to ensure they are up to par. Airplanes can go down because either the transmitter or the flight pack batteries have failed. If you should by chance get your airplane to respond long enough to land, do not taxi back toward the pits. Get it down and kill the engine. A running airplane with dying batteries is little more than a loaded gun waiting to go off and injure someone.

Most folks have a winter project that is now ready for a test flight. New airplanes mean new additions to the transmitter. Remember to always check to ensure it is the correct one for the airplane. Always look to see that the control surfaces are moving in the correct direction when you are ready to taxi out. Also, as a new project, make sure it has been finished with your name and address or AMA number.

Lightning produced by electrical storms can travel amazing distances. If you are flying and should see lightning in the distance, just think of that radio antenna as a lightning rod. Lightning has been known to come 10-20 miles across the sky and strike a person just standing there—and that is without a 3-foot lightning rod in his or her hand.

Engine failure on takeoff is a common occurrence. Every time, when you taxi out, always think, “What am I going to do if the engine quits?” Remember that the best way to land is into the wind and with the wings level. If that means a walk out in the weeds a couple of hundred yards to get your airplane in one piece, that’s much better than taking a broom or shovel out to the middle of the runway to scoop up the pieces. Lastly, it is strongly recommended that members do not fly alone. In a hobby where things can go out of control with the slightest of error, potential dangers are not far behind. It’s helpful to have an extra set of eyes to watch for any interferences or problems the pilot may not be able to see while following his or her model. Better to be overly prepared then under prepared. At the very least, have a safety observer and any emergency telephone numbers available and of course, you will have a buddy to talk to in between flights.
