Minutes

Happy Independence Day!

Minutes for the 4 June 2008 Monthly Meeting of the Atlantic County Skyblazers RC Flying Club.

The meeting was called to order by President Roy Wilson who led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

14 members were present, plus two student members, in spite of the weather

The reading of the minutes from the April meeting was waived.

There were no new members present at the meeting.  However, we gained a few new members this month.  Please welcome Terry Friis to the fold.

The club has made some decisions regarding how and who will handle incoming finances, including dues, and other income areas.  Ed Milewski has taken over as club Treasurer.  The incoming monies will go to Secretary, Dick Soucy who will be responsible for making deposits and forwarding completed deposit slips to Ed Milewski.  Dick will also keep track of membership in the roster and issue membership cards.  Ed will track finances and pay the bills.  This streamlines the operation because Dick has the Newsletter which requires an updated roster.  In other club organizations, the Secretary usually sends out bills, collects dues, and makes deposits for the Treasurer.

The unofficial Sunshine Chair has requested that the club send a donation to the Heritage Foundation on behalf of Ed McAllister’s girlfriend who passed away a short time ago.  The members present agreed with this and the action was taken.

Field and Committee Reports:

Strawberry:  The grass is cut on a regular basis by Bruce Oakes.  The field continually looks good.

Riverbend:  The field has been mowed, again, on a regular basis.  The parking area and road are looking good, and the club is waiting for the County for the road repairs and coverage material.  There seems to be a problem with the doors being left open in the clubhouse during the weekdays at Riverbend. When the building or the gate is open and you are the last to leave the field, be sure both are locked. There have been three occasions in the past few weeks that the building has been found open. PLEASE BE SURE TO LOCK UP THEN YOU LEAVE.

Sunshine:  See above.

Safety:  Items of safety were read based on an Email sent by Ron Lockhart.  Ron made suggestions concerning the sun and heat out at our fields and the liberal use of sun screen and lots of water.

Helicopters:

Aerobatics – Pattern:

Newsletter:

SAM-12:  The club has received the AMA sanction for the SAM12 Old Timers Meet on August 3rd.  Plans for the Oldtimer Meet continue. We have sent out our annual letter to SAM regulars and we have the AMA sanction in hand.

Remember that Strawberry Field will be closed to regular flying on Aug 3 until the trophy presentation is over ( sometime after 2:30pm).

We plan to honor some SAM membrs who have flown with us for at least 10 Years.

A few volunteers will be needed at the Oldtimer event. We will need timers ( bring stopwatch ) and some help in scoring and registration.

Don't forget the SAM 12 Wednesday night fly-ins. " Fly what you brung"-learn about SAM and the Oldtimer hobby--- or just watch---there's always something to laugh at.

Put your antenna up !!

Roy Wilson

Mall Show:  The Shore Mall has agreed to allow us to have our second annual Mall Show.  The event will happen on Saturday, July 12th.  Please on participating.  We will need all kinds of models, from SAM, to Trainers, to Sport, to Pattern, to Large Scale, to Helicopters, and so on.  We are also planning on having at least two computers with SIM’s loaded and running.  Maybe three.  This is a chance to showcase our hobby.  We have a much better area of the mall this year, a bit smaller but a better location, near Boscov’s Department Store.

Riverbend Open House:  As we did last year, the Riverbend Open House will follow the Mall Show by a couple of weeks.  This is a follow up on the Mall Show with live flying demos, buddy box participation, food, soft drinks, and a great opportunity to show off our hobby with actual flying.  Please plan on attending.

FAA:  The FAA is once again having the Aviation Symposium at the FAA Tech Center.  We will need participants to include anyone with an interest in showing off your hardware.  This event will be on Wednesday, July 23rd at the FAA Technical Center.  We also need a few pilots to fly during our allotted time, around noon.  We need fixed wing foamie or electric aircraft and pilots, plus a helicopter or two to fly.  We have a 50 foot height restriction, as usual, so that’s why we are restrictive on the type of aircraft we can fly.  Please plan on attending.  This year, though, the FAATC is celebrating their 50th anniversary and has asked that we have older type aircraft in our static display.  So, SAM12 has agreed to provide several aircraft for display along with the folks to talk about these unique aircraft.

FAA Careers in Aviation:  On Tuesday, July 15th, The FAA is also sponsoring the Careers in Aviation.   Actually, the event is week long, but our day is Tuesday, July 15th.  We have volunteered to meet with the kids and the chaperones at 9:00 AM at Strawberry Field to give flight demonstrations and buddy box flights to the kids.  Mary Lou Dordan is the official FAA host, point of contact, and the Program Director. We also agreed to have burgers and hot dogs, potato chips, and soft drinks for the kids and chaperones.  Please plan on participating.  Bring your trainers and buddy boxes, plus anything else you would like to show off on that day.

Ocean City Air Fest:   We are well on our way to another successful Ocean City Air Fest this year.  As we said in previous newsletters, we are planning on having a little skit to entertain the crowd.  We have purchased a Flying Thingz Flying Lawnmower.  Roy Wilson has started putting it together.  Dick Soucy has an OS 50 FX engine to install, and may have a few servo’s to help with the installation.  He also may have a spare 2.4 GHz Spektrum Receiver to help out with the build.  There are a few things we may need.  As of now, we need an engine mount for a 50 size engine.  Dick may have one, but is not sure.  Roy will outline other items we may need to complete the model.  Brian Tindall said he can fly the thing, and will need a few prep flights before we put together the skit.  It should be fun.  As with other static demonstrations, though, we will need pilots and aircraft.  So, please plan on being there to help out and to show off your bright and shiny aircraft.  The event is on September 20th at the Ocean City Airport on Bay Ave.

Club Barbeque:  Ken Bagdon has agreed to do the club BBQ this year.  We have not yet chosen a date, but we will and we will move forward.  As before, we may plan an impromptu fun fly event or two.  So, bring your planes.  The date will be announced in the “Coming Events” calendar further down in the newsletter.

Leader Club Gold:  We are on track to applying for Leader Gold status.  We’ve met most of the requirements, and have one or two to complete before we send in our application.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:07 PM.

Show and Tell:  Brian Tindall brought in his brand new large scale aircraft.

Dick Soucy, Secretary.

President’s Corner

With our season in full swing, the fields are in good use and in great condition due to regular rains and no immediate problems.

At our meeting of July 2, we will talk about the Mall Show 12 July and the Riverbend Public Event proposed for July 19. These projects are important as they connect with one another.  We need members on hand with models they can talk about at the Mall. The area will be a little smaller than last year, but I'm sure we can display 15 or 20 good examples.  In addition, flight simulators will be offered and handouts and info will be available to support the Riverbend Public Event which will be chaired by Chris and Bob---with our help,

We have had a few compliments about our meeting format and participation has been a bit better. We strive to complete business in one hour but if a special subject obviously presses, we can go to 9:30pm.

Don't be afraid to voice your opinion/suggestions at any meeting or through any officer or even in our newsletter.

Please  volunteer for a position or project this year.  It may seem uncomfortable at first, but be assured you can get help. Some jobs will have to be "handed out".  It is also uncomfortable for club officers to assign members or do it themselves.

Ed Butterly has accepted the position of "Sgt at Arms".  He will handle duties that fall between the responsibilities of regular officers and field marshals. From public info to member condolences, good wishes, etc.  This will be a welcomed addition to club operation. Thanks, Ed.

I had a meeting with Lorraine at the Shore Mall on Tuesday.  We have reserved an excellent location for our Mall Show.

We will get 15 tables with brown cloth covers and there are two electrical outlets in the floor within our square area.( for the flight simulators ). Additionally I will go down on Friday afternoon and drop two pairs of 1/8"line from which we can hang two impressive large birds from nose to tail.  I called to get Art Schoenrock to show his 1/3 Cub.  Who else has an appropriate ship?

We should show examples of all our model types and have personnel ready to explain them.

I would appreciate help on Friday afternoon (11 July) at 4:15 pm and someone to help at 7:30 am on Sat.

I think this location will make a big difference in our presentation. Ideas ?

Our meeting will fall just right in our preparations.

In Memoriam

Sal Cannizzo passed away on May 16,Sal was a great supporter of our annual Oldtimer Meet.  He was a Pioneer AMA member and he participated in virtually every form of model airplane activity including Wakefield team, giant scale, indoor and Oldtimers.

Sall couldn't attend last years' Oldtimers Meet but conveyed his regrets even though very ill.  We will miss him on Aug 3,but know that if he could be anywhere, it would be at our event. He never left before the end and never left before complimenting our club.

A card of condolence has been sent to Sal's family from ACSB and a memorial flight to honor Sal was held on Sat.June 14 at the Ocean County Club's home field.

We also lost Dick McFarlan this month.   Dick passed away in North Carolina on Friday, June 20th.  Several members signed the guest book at the funeral home’s web site.  A memorial donation on Dick’s behalf will be discussed at the July meeting.
