THE NEXT MEETING The Regular Monthly meetings for the Atlantic County

Sky Blazers RC Model Flying Club are held at the

John D. Young Blind Center

100 Crestview Ave, Absecon, NJ

Next meeting will be Wednesday, June 4th, 2008 at 8:00 pm.

Minutes

Minutes for the 7 May 2008 Monthly Meeting of the Atlantic County Skyblazers RC Flying Club.

The meeting was called to order by President Roy Wilson who led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.

18 members were present.

The minutes from the April meeting were read and approved by the membership.

There were no new members present at the meeting.

A motion was made by Dick Soucy and seconded by Bruce Oaks to grant Dave Eiting of Seaport Hobbies a membership to the Skyblazers for 2008 and 2009. It was unanimously approved.

Field reports: Strawberry: Bruce Oakes cut the grass and he reports that the new mower works just fine. Ed Langowski lowered the entry berm at Strawberry so that his car could clear. Thanks, Ed. Now my Volvo doesn’t bottom out either. The new mower needs a trailer for transport, one that is at least 80 inches wide. Riverbend: Ed Butterly reported that wood chips were a bit messy after the rain, but passable. The area is flat and hard, and drivable. Sunshine: We no longer have a Sunshine coordinator, so we are sort of taking care of these items ourselves at the meeting. Dick McFarlan has been in the hospital and is now in rehab. We all signed a card and wish him well. Get better, Dick! Ed McAllister had a tragic loss. His girlfriend passed away last week. We are all sorry to hear that, Ed, and all wish to offer our condolences. Safety: Ron Lockhart reminds us that the sun is bright and intense this time of the year. Liberal use of sunblock. Those of us that spend a fair amount of time in the sun, often at peak sun strength hours of around 10 to 4pm, and also

look upward, have reason to be especially concerned. Here are a couple of extracts from a Cancer Care® brochure that is available at http://www.cancercare.org/pdf/fact_sheets/fs_sun_safety.pdf Unfortunately, sun exposure also presents risk factors that ca lead to skin and eye damage as well as skin cancer. Most skin cancers are caused by too much exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Choose sunscreen labeled “broad spectrum” meaning it protects against tow types of harmful rays, UVA and UVB. Wear a hat with a wider brim to help shade your eyes, ears, and head. Wear wrap around sunglasses that provide 100% UV protection to safeguard your eyes. Helicopters: There are several new helicopters coming out soon. Bob Stinson noted that the Avant Aurora and the T-Rex 700N are among the new releases. Aerobatics – Pattern: Ron noted that the season has begun with the first meet at Jackson, NJ on May 17th. It is a one day event. Other events for this year are shown in the newsletter under “Upcoming Events”. Newsletter: Timely reports are appreciated by the editor. Also, it was discussed that those that have Email, or access to the internet, can get copies of the newsletter via that medium if desired. We can cut down on expenses for postage and printing by encouraging those of you that do have access to a computer and printer to download their copies either from the web site or via Email attachments. SAM-12: Wednesdays are becoming a big hit for the Sam 12’ers. The weather has been cooperating and, accordingly, the pilots have been showing up. Good stuff!! Roy reports that we have received the Sanction for the Annual Oldtimers Meet. SAM 12 had a good flying night last Wed. at Strawberry. Walt's electric Eaglet looked great. Ed Milewski put up the 1/2 A Bomber--- then we dug Walt's Eaglet out of a tree!! I attempted to fly my.09 diesel powered 50" Powerhouse, but just like the GHQ Sportster, it refused to leave the ground.(Because of high-wet grass) It is rumored, however untrue, that I will switch hobbies to RC trucks. Bruce Oakes and Ed Langowski flew also, after waiting out the rain. Come fly with us on Wed---- See the Oldtimers and fly what you brung. Mall Show: The Mall Show is gaining momentum. Roy Wilson checked with Lorraine at Shore Mall. She gave us a date of 12 July, Sat, at Boscov entrance-a slightly smaller area then we had. I told her I would confirm on 5 June. FAA: The Aviation Enrichment Symposium is on schedule for July 23rd. Keep in mind that this will include our normal Sport Aviation aircraft (all disciplines) AND, this year, because the FAA is celebrating their 50th Anniversary, we were invited to show off the old aircraft. So, the SAM folks will have their own ‘booth’ area to show off their aircraft. There will also be a flight demonstration this year. We will need Helicopter and electric aircraft and pilots to put on a demonstration show for the FAA. Additionally, Mary Lou Dordan will be hosting the Second Annual Careers in Aviation Week. We are scheduled to put on a live flight demo at Strawberry which includes buddy box training sessions with the teen-aged students. Ocean City Air Fest: The Air Fest is on again this year for Saturday, 20 September. For this year, we bought the Flying Thingz Flying Lawnmower and are planning on having a little comedy skit with it. This is a kit. We need volunteers to help put this kit together. We will discuss this at the June meeting and get people to help put this “thingz” together. It should be fun. Please plan on both attending and participating. We are also planning on a glider tow, a jet, and several flying sequences involving sport, large scale, and pattern planes. A static display is normal operations for us, and we usually wow the crowd with our good looking, functional, and interesting aircraft. Club Barbeque: Ken Bagdon volunteered to be the point of contact and to run the Club Barbeque to be held at Strawberry Field. The date is still to be determined. Thanks, Ken. Leader Club Gold: Dick Soucy has looked over the requirements for Gold Status for our club. We meet most of the requirements already. The club voted to participate in the Breast Cancer Awareness Battle of the Bands in July that is being chaired by Ms. Susan Blahut, an Absegami High School Senior. The club voted to donate $150.00 for the cause. This will fund the purchase of T-Shirts. The Skyblazers and the Absecon Lions Club have pitched together with $150.00 each to help Susan by funding the T-Shirts. Our best wishes for a successful fund raiser goes out to Susan.

This qualifies us for the charitable donation category for Leader Gold status.

The club also bought a subscription to Model Aviator magazine for the Galloway Library. This checks off another requirement. We’re almost there. There are only a few items that need to be ironed out, and one or two waived (as recommended by the AMA for certain requirements that are beyond our ability based on agreements with the NJ Forestry and the county). Guest Pilots: Anyone that wishes to fly at either of our fields must fill out the appropriate field form, demonstrate flying proficiency, and pay either $25.00 or make a reasonable donation to the club. They will get a temporary club card and a key, if necessary.

Spaghetti Dinner: Well, as things happen, we had to cancel this years Spaghetti Dinner. Events that were overwhelming simply took over and we just had to cancel. We are going to plan differently for 2009. Plan on being there, Feb, 09.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 PM and a show-and-tell was held.

Special note: This club acknowledges the efforts of former officers and volunteers who still maintain responsibilities in the administration of club business. Present officers appreciate this Skyblazer policy and remind members that this policy is in place and that members who would seek office in the club should count on the help of those volunteers.

Second special note: Ron Lockhart has put together an Excel Spread Sheet that we will use to record noise levels of various members aircraft. Ron gave a show-and-tell on how this is done and used one of his electric planes as a demonstration of noise level measurement. Several members have noise measuring meters and can be used at the fields. We would like to get as many club members to participate in this endeavor. The more information we have the better we will be should the issue of noise ever come up. Ron has supplied an outline of how to do the noise measurement and it will be included in a note later on in the newsletter.

Show and Tell:

Dick Soucy brought in the Flying Thingz Flying Lawnmower kit.

Dick Soucy, Secretary.

President’s Corner

Ed McAllister has stepped down as treasurer of the ACSB. Other pressing issues, compounded by Carol's death made this last few months a hectic time for him. I'm sure however we can count on him and his helpful nature as always.

I have asked Ed Milewski, a former treasurer, to take over the duties of treasurer. We should be able to do business in a few days and to prepare the report by June meeting.

We will tie down a date for a family bar-be-que and fun fly at Straw during the next meeting. Ken Bagdon will be P.O.C. for this-after we have a date.

Volunteers have come forward for a few possible events, developments to be announced.

Recent events have reminded that we need a club member to be P.O.C. to represent us in condolences, get well wishes, news of happy events and possible media coverage of our events. We used to call him or her, "Sunshine Chairman".

Remember, we are a club -not a business. We need the energy of all members.

Come fly with me !

Roy Wilson, President, Atlantic County Skyblazers RC Flying Club.

Noise Meter Setup and Testing by Ron Lockhart:

TEST SET UP: Set meter to “A” weighting scale & “Slow” response and the meter scale to mid range. Put model upwind of meter with right side of airplane centerline 10 feet from meter (see below) with the airplanes right side toward meter, left side toward wind. Restrain airplane with one person, with no other objects nearby. Hold meter just behind prop arc (10 feet away). With motor at full throttle, read meter and record as much information as you have. Some data is better than none! Generally, test under 80 inch wingspan planes at 10 feet. Above 80 inches at 25 feet. I'd like to have several tested at both distances. Test Set up for Helicopters is the same, except the helicopter hovers at

58.5 inches high (1.5 meters) while meter is read. Send any questions and data to Ron by phone, email, etc for the master database. Thanks, ronlock@comcast.net 652-3959
