I checked all the links for NY Clubs websites and updated them. There are a few club sites that are not valid any more and I have eliminated the links that did not work.

Please check the listings for New York Clubs and if there is a link missing and you want it put in, email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and I will update the listing. Many clubs tell me that they get new members from having a website, so this can help your club gather more members!

Getting Started in R/C

One of the first things you need to decide is what draws your attention to R/C.

If you are interested in flying planes, pick an AMA Member Club locally and go to a meeting. If you like the group, join it and they will be more than willing to help you learn to fly. Check out the local club links on the left for New York and New Jersey. When you talk to the club members they will help you select the correct plane. They will tell you to start with a trainer either gas or electric powered and learn the basics of flying. Once you have achieved that "Solo" capability, now you can move on to more difficult aircraft. As for the cost, I have seen electric models sold for as little as $149.00 and gas powered trainers at $350.00. Either way, you are not done with just the plane, you also need some of the other accessories to help you fly. That includes things like battery chargers, tools, fuel, spare parts etc. The list goes on and on depending on how much you want to spend.

Lets say that you saw a R/C Helicopter flying and want to learn how to fly those. This will take a bit more research on your part to find a club where some of the flyers are interested in helicopters. Once you find a club like that, the club members will be able to assist you in learning what you need to fly a helicopter. You can get a basic electric powered helicopter for around $250.00 with radio and gas powered will be around $600.00. Then you need the same things as above to help you fly.

I met a man the other day who found out that I was into R/C and he wants to learn how to fly turbine powered jets. My advise to him was to learn how to fly regular gas powered airplanes first and then when he is good at that, find some people that fly jets and move up to those. Flying jets is not at all easy and should not be attempted by someone who has no knowledge flying. The average cost of a turbing powered jet is over $5,000 and that is just starting! That is a lot of money to throw away for not wanting to spend some time learning to fly in the first place.

No matter what you would like to fly, it takes some time to learn how to do it safely and properly. A model airplane can fly into a car and cause thousands of dollars worth of damage in a fraction of a second. That is one of the main reasons I suggest finding a club and there you will find the proper instructions on safe and fun flying.

Have your club activities posted on this site PDF Print E-mail

I have been asked what is needed to for an individual to be able to post club events on the AMA District II Website. This is a very easy thing to do. First is create a login, then send me an email and ask for the permissions to add events/articles to the website. I will then grant the permissions without question.

With the old server the policy was if you had a login, then you could post. As some people are aware, there are objects out there referred to as BOTS. These programs go from site to site creating logins etc trying to gain access. The old system required myself or Gary Fitch to go into the system daily and delete these false identities. At times, there were as many as 200+ a day that we had to filter thru. I decided that was eating up too much of our time so now the verification is performed by the server by sending an email to the requestor asking for verification. So far, BOTS can not respond because they usually use false email addresses.

So just drop me an email, and please include your login name and I will grant the permissions.

Check out the R/C related links. I have started this page to help those starting in the hobby to gain more knowledge. Please email the Webmaster with your local Hobby Shop information and URL so that I can add it to this list. Supporting your local hobby shop gives you a place to go when ever you have a problem. The prices in the local hobby shop will be about the same as the internet, and sometimes cheaper.

Also if you know of a good R/C related site with information about the hobby for new and seasoned pilots, please let me know so we can share that information.

About the Website

Welcome to the new AMA District II Website. We needed to make this change to update our software for the forum. Everything is still available on the website so take a look around to find your old favorites.

Your old login should still work, if there is an issue, please send an email to the Webmaster.

If your club is having an event, send the webmaster an email with the information and we will post the event on the calendar for you. There is still a lot of work to go on this, so any suggestions are welcome. I will be adding modules to the site from time to time to make it better.

There are a few bugs still left in the site, and I am working on them. This website is a work in progress and will always be updated to keep District II on top.

Thanks, Ray Kappes, Webmaster of AMA District II Website
