Casual Fun Flying at Hendershot’s August 7, 2008:

Well, we did it. After the morning and midday showers and the afternoon wind, we got some flying in Thursday night at Hendershot’s. After first meeting at the diner in Hilton, we proceeded to the field where the wind diminished with the approaching evening.
Very nice to see the grand master, Don Steeb, in attendance. Don is always very helpful, especially with flight trimming, and last night was no exception. Jack Barker brought a dime sized Piper Vagabond which he and Don got going in a consistent right hand pattern. Don was also very helpful to me with my Interstate Cadet and Allied Sport models.
Vet Thomas flew an electric powered free flight biplane.
Don brought a popular SE5 park flyer model which I had seen others fly with limited success. Don’s, with his modifications to incidence and trim, flew beautifully. He had also added ailerons. The man is a master!
I flew my two-bit “King Harry” model with a new prop. It’s a Gordon Roberts designed prop as published in the “Crosswinds” newsletter. The first flight resulted in a long chase, which may have been as much a result of some wind and drift early in the evening (it was my first flight), but I think the new prop will work okay. Thanks to Gordon Roberts and Russ Brown of “Crosswinds”.
The Western New York Free Flight Society is holding its Empire State Free Flight Championships next Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, August 15, 16, and 17 at Geneseo. Info is on the Web Site at http://www.amadistrictii.org/wnyffs/ . Hope to see you all there. As always, if anyone would like to be added to the notification list for the flying sessions at Hendershot’s, please feel free to contact me Jim DeTar cell phone:(585) 298-0239 email: jrdetar@yahoo.com

Casual Fun Flying at Hendershot’s June 26, 2008:

We had a great evening of casual dining, BSing and flying in Hilton on Wednesday, June 25. The Hilton Family Restaurant fit the bill nicely as a place to meet and eat. Thanks to Vet Thomas for the suggestion.

The wind finally calmed to a reasonable level late in the evening at Hendershot Field allowing everyone to get in some flights. Vet Thomas led the way with hand and catapult launch gliders, as well as an electric powered biplane. He also had an electric helicopter. Bob Clemens has a new two bit rubber model from an old Scientific plan which looked great on its first ever flights. I can’t remember the name of the plane, but look out Two Bit Rubber event!! Bob’s new Douglas observation plane from the Golden Age kit also looked great (like all Bob’s models) and flew in a very satisfying manner. Some tweaks to the flight trim and finishing to the rigging and Bob will have it ready for Geneseo.

Jack Barker flew a Jimmy Allen high wing model which also did well. Walt Kornrich flew his well known Pitcairn Fleetwing dime scale model but also has a new Glouster Gannet dimer that was a very nice flyer. Walt mentioned that this new model may become his primary Dime Scale entry. I’m still working on trimming out the Lockheed Altair.

Mark Rzadca was unable to join us, but we look forward to seeing him next time. The weather forecast does not look good for now through the weekend, which given the weather cycles we could be in good shape to do this again the middle of next week. I will watch the weather and send out an email alert, but tentatively plan on next Wednesday, July 2. Anyone should feel free to join us.

Call my cell number or email me for questions, information, or directions to the restaurant and flying field.
