Notes / Comments:

2009 EMPIRE STAT FREE FLIGHT CHAMPIONSHIPS - CD’s Comments (from Summer 09 TJ)
Friday dawned bright and sunny w/gentle wind drift from the SW. Occasional changes in direction kept the flyers on their toes but were temporary in nature with no strong or prolonged gusts to cause concern. 14 competitors signed in this day to get us off to a good
start.
Saturday we looked forward to FAI and FAC flyers to fill the skies along with the AMA/ NFFS and SAM events. The forecast is for SW winds (light and variable). The forecast was accurate until about 2 PM when the breeze shifted to the NNE. This required that the flyers alter their launch area to the NE portion of the field (to avoid farm buildings, crops, Aircraft hangar and the C-47’s parked near the hangar). Flight times were reported by radio to the control point.
Saturday night dinner at the Yard of Ale was attended by 30 hungry modelers and friends/wives. All seemed to enjoy their dinner and gave the restaurant a round of applause.
Sunday awoke with SSW wind drift. THIRD day in a row, not at all like this site; but all were pleased. The heat continued and fluid intake was a requirement and all exhibited good judgment in this area, resting in the shade of canopies between flights. All flyers and friends seemed to enjoy the three day event. There were new people to meet, mostly wives and girlfriends of flyers we have met before. Disappointment in that we had no “Junior” participation in the AMA events offered. I think that this is the third year in a row w/no “Juniors” or “Seniors”. Some of us joked about changing the definition of age classes since many of the flyers are “Maturing Adults”.
Perhaps the age groups should be “YOUTH up to 19”“ADULT up to 50” “SENIOR 51+”.
I owe a giant Thank-You to the Trophy committee; Brad and Ruth Ann Bane and Joe and Heather Mollendorf for the Excellent trophies. I would also like to thank Asst. CD Bob Rambo for his able assistance. Thank-you also to Mark Rzadca for his willingness to file the report to “Flying Aces” and to the FAC flyers who patiently tried to help me understand those rules. John and Sally Clapp also a big Thank-You for managing the FAI events.
Last but not least, Thank you Priscilla for putting up with me for three hot and humid days.
