First Indoor Flying at the Pieters Family Life Center

This panoramic shot shows most of the WNYFFS fliers hard at work readying their creations for flight. Walt Kornrich (right) has one already airborne.

Nine intrepid WNYFFS members answered the call for inaugural indoor flying at the Pieters Family Life Center in Henrietta on Saturday January 19. Present and accounted for were Jack Barker, Jim DeTar, Carl VanVoorhis, David Rosenberg, Bob Clemens, Lew Eltscher, Vince Sadwick, Mark Rzadca, and Walt Kornrich. A good time was had by all.

the sidelines after retrieving their models.

Conditions in the PFLC gym were very good, marred only slightly when the fans came on for about 15 minutes. Most of the two hour session saw relatively calm air conditions with little drift and no model hang-ups. Testing the air were aircraft ranging from lightweight endurance ships to no-cal profile and peanut scale models and sport craft. Tables were available from a storeroom just off the gym floor. Consensus among the fliers was that the site is a good one and all agreed they’d come back for another session. There will other sessions on Saturday February 23 , March 8th and April 12th - all at 3:00 -5: 00 pm. Like the first one, adult fliers will be charged to cover the rental fee of $30 per hour. This fee will be determined on site according to the number of participants. This is strictly informal flying and non-WNYFFS members are welcome, as are youngsters. The PFLC is located off Castle Road just south of where East Henrietta Road crosses I-390. Google Map of the location can be found on this website by clicking <here>.

Walt Kornrich makes an adjustment on his dime scale Supermarine Sparrow. Models in this Flying Aces Club class are patterned after the 10-cent kits sold by Comet, Megow, and other manufacturers in the late 1930’s and early 40’s. Wingspan limit is 16 inches. Those of us over 70 remember them fondly.   Mark Rzadca joined the ranks of lightweight rubber fliers with this model. Mark used colored film from a Kodak dye sublimation printer as covering material. Light!
